Historique :

La voiture a appartenu pendant de nombreuses années à Douglas Shierson (Marathon Oil). L’écurie Shierson et Marathon Oil se sont investies dans le sport automobile — en tant qu’écurie et sponsor — dès le début des années 1970 avec des prototypes sportifs de 2 litres engagés à Daytona et Sebring, puis dans le championnat de Formule Atlantic à la fin des années 1970. Dans les années 1980, ils se sont lancés dans le championnat CART IndyCar avec des pilotes tels que Danny Sullivan, Al Unser Jr. et Arie Luyendyk, ce dernier remportant les 500 miles d’Indianapolis en 1990 pour le compte du Team Shierson. Dans les années 2000, Marathon Oil a sponsorisé l’écurie NASCAR de Kyle Petty (voiture n° 45). Shierson a vendu la March à James King au début des années 1990.

James King, l’un des fondateurs de la série HGP (Historic Grand Prix) aux États-Unis, a fait l’acquisition de la voiture au début des années 1990. Il avait auparavant couru en Formule Atlantic professionnelle dans les années 1970, affrontant des pilotes comme Villeneuve, Rosberg et Rahal, et avait également participé au championnat d’Europe de Formule 2. Dans les séries TGP, HGP et Masters, James a remporté de nombreuses courses et a rarement quitté le podium. Il a piloté la March 761 lors de diverses épreuves européennes de Grand Prix historiques, retrouvant même Vittorio Brambilla à Monza (Italie) pour une participation en tant qu’invité.

La voiture a ensuite été vendue à Steven Romak, fils de Bud Romak (qui pilotait une McLaren M8F au début des années 1970). Steven a piloté la March en compétition dans la série HGP aux États-Unis, jouant constamment les premiers rôles et remportant même quelques victoires face à des monoplaces de F1 plus récentes. Romak a également piloté des Williams FW08 et des Tyrrell 012 en Formule 1, s’imposant dans les séries Masters et HGP.

État :

La March 761 a été restaurée en 1992-1993 par Geoffrey Davie à Reading (Royaume-Uni) pour le compte de Doug Shierson. À cette occasion, le moteur Cosworth DFV a été reconstruit par Douglas Lawson, ancien collaborateur de Nicholson McLaren Engines (Royaume-Uni). La voiture restaurée a été expédiée chez Shierson, dans le Michigan, en 1993. Vendue par la suite à James King, elle a été entretenue par Phil Reilly & Co à Corte Madera.

Sous la propriété de Steve Romak, le moteur a été préparé par Forest Terran (un protégé de Phil Reilly) et l’assistance en course a été assurée par Auto Spa à Sonoma. La voiture a toujours bénéficié de l’entretien des meilleurs ateliers de compétition de Californie. Elle a fait l’objet d’un suivi de premier ordre et dispose d’un excellent dossier historique (fiches de montage moteur et de passage au banc, rapports d’assistance sur piste). Elle a couru avec sa livrée d’époque « Beta Tools ».

History:

Owned by Douglas Shierson of Marathon Oil for many years. Team Shierson and Marathon oil were involved in Motorsports as a team owner and a Sponsor in the early 1970’s with 2-liter Sports Prototypes that raced at Daytona and Sebring, and it the late 1970’s Formula Atlantic championship and in the 1980’s ventured into the CART Indy car series with drivers, Danny Sullivan, Al Unser Jr. and Arie Luyendyk. Luyendyk winning the 1990 Indy 500 for Team Shierson. By the 2000’s Marathon Oil was a sponsor of the Kyle Petty’s Number 45 Nascar Team. Shierson sold the March to James King in the early 1990’s.

Selling to James King one of the Founders of the HGP (Historic Grand Prix) series in the USA in the early 1990’s. James who raced in Pro Formula Atlantics against the likes of Villeneuve, Rosberg, and Rahal in the 1970’s and raced in the European Formula 2 series. In the TGP, HGP and Masters Series James won numerous races and was rarely off of the podium. James raced the March 761 in various European Historic Grand Prix races, even reuniting with Vittorio Brambilla at Monza, Italy for a guest drive.

Selling then to Steven Romak son of Bud Romak who raced a McLaren M8F in the early 1970’s. Steven raced the March competitively in the USA HGP series always a front runner and even with a few wins against newer F1 cars. Romak who also raced Williams FW08 and a Tyrrell 012 Formula One cars to wins in the Masters and HGP series.

Condition:

The March 761 was restored in 1992-1993 by Geoffrey Davie in Reading, UK for Doug Shierson. At that time The Cosworth DFV was rebuilt by Douglas Lawson formerly of Nicholson McLaren Engines UK. The restored car was shipped to Shierson in Michigan in 1993. Then selling to James King the car is maintained by Phil Reilly and Co in Corte Madera.

Then during Steve Romaks ownership the engine was built by Forest Terran a protégé of Phil Reilly and race support was by the Auto Spa in Sonoma. Always maintained by the best race shops in California. First Class upkeep and excellent records. Engine build and dyno sheets and track support records. Racing in period Beta Tools livery.
